Abstract
South Africa’s water sector faces a deepening infrastructure crisis. Rand Water, Umgeni Water, Lepelle Northern Water, Magalies Water, Amatola Water and other water boards collectively manage tens of thousands of kilometres of bulk water transmission mains, rising mains and distribution pipelines, much of it ageing, operating beyond design life, and under increasing mechanical stress from load-shedding-driven pump cycling. Non-revenue water (NRW) losses cost the country an estimated R7.3 billion annually, with pipeline leakage a primary driver.
