Assessing Small-Scale Inland Fishery Potential at Flag Boshielo and Glen Alpine Dams, Limpopo Province, South Africa
Abstract
This Water Research Commission (WRC) report presents the findings of a pilot project designed to evaluate the potential for small-scale inland fisheries at Flag Boshielo and Glen Alpine dams in Limpopo Province, South Africa. The report presents a comprehensive assessment of the fisheries resources, ecological status and socioeconomic significance of Flag Boshielo Dam (FBD) and Glen Alpine Dam (GAD) in the province. The study responds to a longstanding national need for scientifically grounded evaluations of inland fishery potential to inform the implementation plan of the National Freshwater (Inland) Wild Capture Fisheries Policy (NFWCFP). Limpopo Province has been identified as one of the regions with the highest inland fisheries potential in South Africa, but evidence -based data gaps, weak governance and environmental degradation have hindered the sector's development, policy implementation and sustainable utilisation.
